What Should Be Your Level of Knowledge About Things You Put on Your Resume?
I get this question a lot where lots of people are confused about whether they should put a particular skill on their resume or not. We all have that impostor syndrome, where we have a working knowledge of a particular technology but not confident enough to say that we are an expert on it. It is completely natural to feel this way. Building expertise in anything takes years of work, and if everyone starts putting just the things they are expert on, most of the resumes will be completely empty.
A rule of thumb is that if you can answer about the work you have done using a particular skill, you are well within your rights to add it to your resume. During the interview, you should be able to answer basic questions about the technology and how it was used in your project.
If you still feel nervous about adding a skill because you have very basic knowledge on it, you can divide your skillset section into three parts. Call these parts as “Beginner”, “Intermediate” & “Advanced”. Group your skills into one of these sections based on how confident you feel. That way, you are calling out upfront to the interviewer on how much knowledge you have in a particular technology.
So next time, when you are building your resume, do not stress out because you are not an expert. No one can be an expert on everything.
