Why Do Software Engineers At Top Tech Companies Leave Their Job To Do An MBA?
Many engineers in high paying positions at good tech companies like Amazon, Flipkart leave their jobs to do an MBA from reputed colleges like IIMs. Since they are earning good money and already have a tag of a good brand, there are so many questions that come to mind when we see them making this switch. Does the brand name of IIM help much better than working at big tech ? Do engineers at FAANG companies reach a ceiling in their career which can only be raised by doing an MBA ? What kind of roles do these people get once they graduate from the MBA college ?
The major reason for a tech person at a top notch company to do an MBA is to switch into core management roles that do not involve engineering.
Many people are not really interested in engineering work like coding or building software systems. Even if they become senior and grow into management roles within software, they are eventually working as engineering managers. Some people want to go into roles like product management, strategy, finance, consulting and so on. They are more interested in roles which determines the roadmap of a product or an organisation. It is super hard to get into such roles by just being a software engineer. So these decide to do an MBA from a good college and opens doors of opportunities into these roles.
Another reason for going into MBA from top tech companies is to improve your network.
Some people want to eventually move into entrepreneurship. Having a good network can help your business grow in lots of ways like securing funding or hiring top talent. At good B Schools, you get to build a network of cream of the country.
Though in recent years, there have been massive increases in compensation of software engineers at big tech companies.
At times, a recent MBA graduate from top B School earns less than a senior software engineer at a big tech company. This has resulted in less number of people going for MBA once they have cracked into big tech companies.
